La Tovara, in San Blas, Nayarit, just a three-hour drive from Guadalajara, is one of the most impressive ecotourism destinations in the region.
A place where saltwater and freshwater mix, creating an ideal environment for diverse species, including crocodiles, turtles, and birds.
An unmissable experience, this is a protected wetland with great biodiversity, ideal for spotting a wide variety of wildlife—that’s why they call it the Mexican Amazon!
How to get to La Tovara in San Blas?

You’ll mainly take the Guadalajara–Tepic Highway (Mexico 15D). The approximate toll cost is around $800.
Once in San Blas, just follow the signs to the pier. The main ones are El Conchal and La Aguada.
It is highly recommended to arrive early to make the most of the tour, as it is cooler, less crowded, and there is more animal activity.
If you want to make the most of the experience, consider visiting between November and April (dry season) or between December and February, when there are more migratory birds.
What to do in La Tovara?

The main attraction is the boat tour, a trip through the mangroves that will allow you to get an up-close look at this ecosystem. The trip lasts between 1.5 and 3 hours, depending on the route.
There are two main options: the short tour from the tourist pier and the long tour, which is more comprehensive.
The tour ends at a spring with crystal-clear waters, where you can swim. Additionally, there’s a restaurant along the way where you can try local food.
The cost of the tour is usually between $250 and $300 per person on a shared boat, or you can opt for a private boat if you’re traveling in a group.
Recommendations before the trip

Take advantage of this getaway to enjoy a few nights in the area and discover places like La Islita, a wave-free paradise that looks like a giant natural pool.
Bring sunscreen and biodegradable insect repellent, as there are jejenes (insects typical of the area).
It is also recommended to wear light but covering clothing, bring cash, and avoid touching or feeding the animals.
