Important information! Due to the recent outbreak of the measles virus, several vaccination centers have been opened in Guadalajara and the surrounding area. This has raised questions about which groups in the population are priority groups.
However, there is one group in the population that is not a priority for receiving the vaccine against the virus, and that is people over 50. We’ll tell you more!
Why are people over 50 not a priority group for the vaccine?
Given the increase in measles cases, many adults may wonder if they should get the vaccine, but if you are over 50, you probably don’t need it.
Dr. Mauricio Rodríguez (spokesperson for the UNAM Epidemiological Risk Program) explained that these individuals do not need to be vaccinated against measles, as it has been scientifically proven that they have sufficient protective levels.
This is because they were already exposed to the virus during childhood, when the disease was very common and vaccination was not as accessible. This made them more susceptible to infection at that time, causing them to develop immunity to the disease.
What you should keep in mind is that if you are under 49 years of age and do not have your complete vaccination schedule, it is important that you go and get the vaccine.
Who are the priority groups?

Given the low coverage during the COVID pandemic, several vaccination schedules for children were incomplete, which led to a spike in cases.
According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the priority groups are:
- Girls and boys aged 1 year and 18 months.
- Children aged 2 to 9 who have fallen behind.
- Adolescents and adults aged 10 to 49.
- Healthcare workers.
- Educational personnel.
