If you thought you had to cross the border to see Arizona-style landscapes, there’s a surprise waiting for you much closer than you think.
Los Piloncillos, Michoacán, are a collection of geological formations that look like they’re from another planet—and they’re just three hours from Guadalajara!
A magical, little-known place full of natural sculptures in ochre tones, which contrast with the green of the country’s west.
You can explore it on foot, and it’s also a popular destination for mountain bikers.
What are Los Piloncillos de Michoacán and how were they formed?

These formations are the result of thousands (or rather millions) of years oferosioncaused by wind and water on the rock.
The result: columns, peaks, and irregular shapes reminiscent of piloncillos—hence the name—that create an almost sculptural landscape.
This type of geological phenomenon is similar to what can be seen in areas like the Arizona desert or even in certain parts of Cappadocia, Turkey.
How to get there from Guadalajara

Getting there is relatively easy, but it does require some planning, as it isn’t very well signposted.
From Guadalajara, take the highway toward La Piedad and continue on to the rural area of Michoacán where these formations are located.
- Approximate time: 3 to 3.5 hours
- Best way to get there: by car (preferably a high-clearance vehicle)
- Tip: Download the map beforehand, because the signal may be spotty
