It’s official! Atlas will have a new stadium, and here are all the details. Yesterday, the University of Guadalajara approved the project to build a new sports complex in the Los Belenes area of Zapopan, on what was formerly known as Calle 2.
The stadium will be shared by Atlas and Leones Negros and will be part of a much larger project covering approximately 16 hectares of land that includes retail spaces, restaurants, and a hotel.
Where will the new Atlas stadium be located?
The stadium will be built in the Los Belenes neighborhood of Zapopan, within the area known as Calle 2. It will be just a few meters away from some of the city’s most important cultural and entertainment venues, such as the Telmex Auditorium and the Performing Arts Complex.
What will the new Atlas stadium be like?
The project calls for a stadium with a capacity of between 30,000 and 40,000 people. The design will be handled by Populous, an international firm specializing in sports venues. Among its projects are Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Wembley Stadium, and Lusail Stadium.
How much will it cost to build?
The total investment for the project could be around $450 million, according to estimates released by representatives of the UdeG. Construction will be financed by Grupo PRODI, the owner of Atlas.
What will the new Atlas stadium feature?
The complex will include a luxury hotel, a permanent shopping plaza with dining options, a museum, a large parking lot, and entertainment areas, complemented by the expansion of surrounding roads to mitigate the urban impact on Zapopan.
When will it be ready?
The opening is tentatively scheduled for 2030, but this is not yet a definitive date. Before then, traffic and environmental impact studies must be completed, and the necessary licenses and permits must be obtained from the municipality of Zapopan.
